The Dragonfly 25 folding trimaran is a high-performance trailer-sailer, for sport and racing sailors looking for an exhilarating lightweight sports trimaran with 2+2 accommodation for 'weekender cruising' with family or friends. In concept it is a successor to our classic Dragonfly 800 of which almost 300 were built in the 1980/90s, and which was much-loved by owners including Olympic legend Paul Elvstrøm.
Remarkably, just 12 months after this project was announced, the first boat was exhibited at the Düsseldorf Boot 2015 show, while this video shows the very first sail soon after in a very chilly Denmark:
The latest version of our Swing Wing system allows the Dragonfly 25 to fold within two minutes (using no tools) to just 2.3m beam to berth in a single marina berth with the outriggers upright and only the antifouling in the water, or to be recovered directly onto the trailer which is light enough to be towed by a normal family car.
The powerful, high-volume outriggers extend forward of the centre hull for maximum diagonal stability when reaching, and the new hull lines create distinctive reverse bows as seen on the latest racing multihulls, while the computer-optimised structure ensures a rigid platform for dynamic and responsive handling.
The Dragonfly 25 Touring comes as standard with a 10.5m single-spreader rotating alloy mast, furling self-tacking jib for ease of single-handing, and a fully-battened mainsail with mainsheet traveller in the cockpit. The Sport version adds a taller 12m rotating carbon wing mast and larger sails for truly exhilarating performance.
The large cockpit offers generous seating and clear visibility, and all sailing controls including reefing are led back to the cockpit for ease of use and safety. There is also a large aft locker below the cockpit sole for fenders etc. Auxiliary power is by 3-6hp outboard on the transom or even a modern electric motor.
The boat's safety is further enhanced by the foam sandwich construction and the multiple watertight compartments in the outriggers, which make all Dragonfly trimarans unsinkable.
Down below, the Dragonfly 25 offers comfortable seating for 4 adults and '2+2' berths, for 2 adults plus 2 kids or 3 adults. The galley is positioned aft while a large companionway hatch and flush cabin windows offer plenty of natural light. When cruising, the (optional) sprayhood and cockpit tent quickly convert the cockpit into a second saloon.
