The Dragonfly 35 folding trimaran is one of the World's fastest cruising yachts, as Yachting World magazine discovered while "doing 20 knots, usually the preserve of ocean race boats and adrenalin-junkie skiffs. The difference is you can still make a mug of tea".
The 6-berth Dragonfly 35 is a natural step up for current Dragonfly 920 sailors, but it will also be the perfect boat for monohull sailors who want to explore the world of trimaran sailing.
The Dragonfly 35 carries a powerful sailplan on a standard carbon mast, with a Ronstan batten car system for safe sail handling. Their are two rig sizes offered, depending on whether the Touring (16m carbon mast) or Ultimate (17.5m carbon mast) version is chosen. A choice of downwind sails may be flown from the optional 1.5m carbon bowsprit, which retracts into the bow when mooring. An epoxy/carbon rudder blade is also standard.
The spacious cockpit is equipped with a tiller as standard (wheel steering is optional), and is positioned quite high to provide excellent forward visibility. A wide seat is provided for the helmsman, integrated with a moulded backrest which also folds up to support the cockpit tent system. The aft cockpit coaming opens for easy access to the rudder, and a bathing ladder is located on one float stern, safely away from the propeller.
Moving below, immediately inside the companionway there is a large chart table to port, and to starboard the access to the aft double bunk below the cockpit. The main cabin offers a long galley to starboard (with provision for a refrigerator and a small oven), with 1.9m standing headroom throughout. In addition, the large dinette to port is easily converted into a double bunk. Moving forward, there is a spacious toilet compartment with shower, and access to the forward cabin, which offers a generous double v-berth, ample stowage and floor space to dress in comfort.
Alternatively, the optional 'Classic' interior option features an alternative layout with seating both sides of a large oval table, and a new galley positioned to port of the companionway.
The Dragonfly 35 comes with a 30 HP inboard diesel engine with sail drive and folding propeller installed in a dedicated stern compartment. This layout offers full thrust on the rudder for effortless manoeuvring and prevents the sail drive from being lower than the centre hull, plus all the diesel equipment is isolated from the cabins to reduce noise an smells.
Standard Dragonfly features include an automatic kick-up rudder and centre board, quality Andersen stainless steel winches and Frederiksen/Ronstan deck gear. For maximum safety, all Dragonfly trimarans are unsinkable due to the foam sandwich construction and multiple watertight compartments.
Each boat is built to order and a comprehensive list of options allows each owner to tailor the Dragonfly 35 to their needs, including an innovative canoe/windsurfer locker in the outrigger, accessed through the stern.
The Dragonfly 35 has proved to be a resounding success, with rave reviews and the title of 'European Yacht of the Year 2008' in the Multihull category. The jury of 11 of the most respected yachting magazines in Europe (including Yachting World in the UK) praised the clever use of space, quality and seaworthiness when tested in up to F8 and 4m waves, when they recorded over 22 knots
