Best Boats quote

"The Dragonfly is all about having fun, extreme fun. When we sheeted in and first hit 10 knots - all verified by GPS - that was a bit of a 'wow', but when we returned to 10 knots later it just seemed slow. Because by then we'd eased up through the teens, squeezed through the 20 knot barrier and peaked at 22 knots; 22 knots in a 30 footer - now that was the real wow! And that, as every editor scrambled for 'their turn' was why she convincingly won her category in EYOTY 2003"

DF920 TOURING - Trailerable offshore sport cruiser

DF920 EXTREME - Trailerable offshore cruiser/racer

The Dragonfly 920 Touring model, introduced in 2005, is based on the well known 920 Cruising and Racing models which were first launched in 1996. The Touring model is equipped with curved beams similar to the Extreme version and the longer mainsail boom of the previous 920 Racing.

The Dragonfly 920 Extreme model was introduced in 2003. It is based on the same centre hull as the Touring version, but has wider curved beams and longer floats, a taller rig and a deeper full-carbon rudder and centreboard to improve performance. The 920 Extreme is approx 15% faster than the standard Touring version and was awarded the coveted title of European Yacht of the Year 2003.

With these two models in the Dragonfly 920 series, all sailors are catered for. For those who focus on cruising, the 920 Touring offers less heeling and shallow draft which are very important, making it the perfect boat for newcomers to the multihull scene, whereas the Extreme version is for the keen sailor who demands ultimate performance and fun in the fast lane. More than 150 Dragonfly 920s have now been built.

The Dragonfly 920 sleeps four people, has a separate head and offers a pleasant main cabin with excellent visibility. With the optional sprayhood, cockpit tent and cockpit table, there is ample living space in all weathers.

Dragonfly 920 plan

The size of this boat has a broad appeal - big enough for a family even on an extended cruise, yet handy and tempting for a shorter trip or single handling. Every effort has been made to fulfil the modern sailors demands.

To most people, multihull sailing is still a new world, but Dragonfly trimarans have proved their seaworthiness over the years in all conditions. The sleek lines cut through the waves - pounding and rolling in a seaway is something we leave to monohulls.

The powerful fully battened mainsail and roller furling genoa combined with the high buoyancy floats with the latest developments for underwater bodies contribute to maintain speed with a minimum of heel. It is a pleasure to feel her quick responses when at the tiller on this beautifully balanced sail boat.

The cockpit and deck layout prove that the boat is designed for top performance, cruising as well as racing, and all control lines are led to cockpit for easy and safe handling. There are plenty of compartments to store all the lines. Even the kick-up rudder and centreboard lines are operated in the cockpit.

The high-tech carbon fibre mast (half the weight of aluminium) keeps down pitching in a seaway - a feature of utmost importance for performance and comfort. The boom is equipped with lazy-jacks that make storing of the mainsail quick and easy, while the Ronstan batten car system makes setting and lowering the mainsail even in strong conditions a pleasure.

The 10 Hp 4-stroke Honda outboard gives a cruising speed of 6.5 knots, ample power for safe manoeuvring and tilts up easily when not required (power-tilt is an option with the 15hp). With electrical start and built in fuel tank, you almost have the same advantages as an inboard engine, yet the boat can be beached without vulnerability of a fixed propeller. For optimal manoeuvring in marinas, the engine is linked to the tiller, so it is steered in the same direction as the rudder.

The trampolines provide an excellent relaxation area and room to keep a fully inflated dinghy while under way. Another great feature is the shoal draft of just 45 cm, allowing access to places and anchorages that are the envy of conventional monohull yachts.

The Dragonfly 920 has won a series of awards. In 2003 the 920 Extreme was voted European Yacht of the Year, while in 2006 the 920 was voted 45th among the 100 Best Boats of the Century by Yachting Monthly magazine.
